Fjord Tours

Somes Sound is the only natural fjord on the east coast of the United States.  It is a seven-mile long glacial cut, and is a truly stunning sight. Dramatic rock walls drop straight into the water, enabling the unique phenomenon of sailing within arms reach of the shore, and still being in over 100 feet of water! Where the land slopes more gradually down, the fjord is lined with beautiful historic mansions, visible only from the water. Valley Cove, (inside the fjord), is a tranquil oasis, and a perfect place to drop anchor and take a swim, or row ashore for a quick hike up flying mountain for commanding views of Somes Sound. The sheer rock cliffs that surround Valley Cove are the nesting grounds of peregrine falcons, and a bald eagle can often be found in a nearby tree. Man O’ War Brook, further down the fjord, is a small but beautiful waterfall, especially after a rain, as well as a point of historical interest. Old gun ships, called Man O’ Wars, would sail into the Sound, in order to collect fresh water from this bountiful source. The exceptionally deep water adjacent to the shore, made it possible for these sailors to set up gutters, and spill the water directly into storage barrels and tanks, as well as enjoy a much needed shower for themselves! †Not only is the sound an incredible place to see from the water, it is also a sanctuary away from the fog. Even on days when fog is thick as “pea soup,” as we say, there is nearly always clear air and visibility in Somes Sound.
